The Volkswagen Jetta GLI gives compact-sedan shoppers a livelier alternative to the standard Jetta, pairing everyday usability with genuine performance hardware. Since its 1984 debut, the GLI has been the hotter Jetta, distinguished over the years by more power, sharper chassis tuning, and sportier styling. It even comes with a performance monitor displaying real-time driving stats such as turbo boost pressure, engine output, and multidirectional G-force data. What it no longer has, though, is a manual transmission – although that’s not surprising with the ongoing trends across the automotive realm. VW’s seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic still provides pleasurable driving for the enthusiast, though.
The Jetta GLI remains plenty quick, with Car and Driver recording a 5.6-second 0-to-60-mph time and exceeding both the Honda Civic Si and the Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus in horsepower. Volkswagen has also made several technology and driver-assistance updates shared with the non-GLI Jetta lineup, including improved lane centering, enhanced predictive adaptive cruise control, and an upgraded rear-seatbelt reminder. The Jetta GLI is offered exclusively in a single, well-equipped Autobahn trim.
