Although vehicle batteries don’t provide power and performance, fuel economy, handling, or braking, they are an integral part of every vehicle’s design. They don’t run the electric system while the engine is running, the alternator does that, but the battery does run electric components such as door locks, the alarm system, or perhaps the radio when the car is turned off. The battery’s real importance is it turns the starter motor to get the engine running so it can do all the other things in the vehicle’s subsystems that are happening as you drive.
Battery replacement is difficult to predict because it depends on several factors that are impossible to know. The battery’s quality is important, as a battery can only run and recharge a certain number of cycles in its lifetime. Starting and stopping the car for short drives several times per day will put more strain on the battery than making one or two daily drives that are long enough for the alternator to fully recharge the battery. Another consideration is leaving the lights on, or perhaps the alarm goes off without the driver realizing it, and the battery is completely drained, after which it will never work properly again. With that said, a good quality battery under average conditions can generally be expected to last 2-3 years or longer.
The first thing a driver will notice when the battery begins going bad is it will take longer to start the car, because the starter motor isn’t receiving the full power it was designed for. After that symptom, there will likely be a time when the car has to be jump-started by another vehicle, especially if it hasn’t been driven for an extended period, because the battery is unable to maintain its charge and is slowly losing power even though it isn’t in use. As it gets worse, the car will have to be jump-started every time it is driven, which can be quite an inconvenience. Eventually, the car won’t run at all because the battery has completely failed and is unable to run the current of the alternator through it.
