One of Volkswagen’s most iconic vehicles makes its return for 2020 with additions to its standard equipment. All trim levels now get a 5-year subscription to Volkswagen’s Car-Net telematics app, which lets users control several the Jetta’s features via their smartphone. The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The S gets standard 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, cloth seating surfaces, a USB port, App-Connect, Volkswagen Car-Net, a rearview camera, Bluetooth audio streaming, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen multimedia display. The SE adds a panoramic sunroof, heated side mirrors, V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access with push-button ignition, and additional driver aids. The R-Line adds 17-inch alloy wheels, exclusive R-Line exterior and interior accents, and power-operated exterior mirrors. The SEL adds even more luxurious features, such as heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a heated steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 10-color customizable interior ambient lighting, heated rear seats, a wireless smartphone charger, an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen , and BeatsAudio for top sound quality. At the top of the trim ladder, the SEL Premium ups the comfort with leather seating, including bolstered front sport seats that are heated and ventilated.
Mechanical Features and Fuel Economy
All trims have the same 1.4-liter turbocharged 147 horsepower 4-cylinder engine. The S and R-Line trims get a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, but an 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode is available (the automatic transmission comes standard on the remaining three trims). This front-wheel-drive sedan gets outstanding fuel economy, as it’s rated for an EPA-estimated 40 mpg highway and 30 mpg city, for a combined 35 mpg. It also has a 13.5-gallon fuel tank, which translates to up to a 540-mile fuel range.
The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta demonstrates its fine crash protection with a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It has been engineered with top-of-the-line collision-impact technology, including a crash-optimized front end and side curtain airbags in the front and rear of the vehicle. The SE trim adds driver-assist features, like a blind spot monitor and forward collision warning system with autonomous emergency braking. The Volkswagen Car-Net Safe & Secure app comes standard to provide helpful features like automatically notifying first responders when there’s a significant crash, roadside assistance contact, and manual emergency calls.
