The 2025 Golf R has two trims: standard and Black Edition. Both versions are powered by an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that distributes 328 horsepower to all four wheels. A seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission manages the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, which can distribute up to 100% of the rear torque to one side. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The Golf R has 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats and 34.5 cubic feet behind the front row when the rear seatback is flattened.
The Golf R lives up to its hot hatch moniker thanks to advanced DCC adaptive damping, progressive power steering, and a sport-tuned suspension. Both trims include perforated Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front sport seats, a 12-way power driver’s seat with position memory, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-reclining front passenger seat, heated rear outboard seats, three zones of automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable instrument display, a head-up display, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and 19-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires.
Additional standard equipment for both includes LED exterior lighting with automatic headlights, an illuminated front grille light bar and VW logo, heated power side mirrors with passenger-side auto-tilt, heated washer nozzles, puddle lights projecting the “R” logo, rain-sensing variable intermittent windshield wipers, 30-color adjustable ambient cabin lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, four USB-C ports, and wireless device charging. The Black Edition also gets carbon-fiber interior trim and replaces the standard blue accents with blacked-out exterior elements, including grille and headlight details, logos, brake calipers, and exhaust tips. The Euro Style Package is optional on either trim.
Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance technology suite is standard on the 2025 Golf R. Its components are forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Also standard are Emergency Assist (the vehicle will autonomously pull over if the driver is unresponsive), Travel Assist (semi-autonomous hands-on driving support), and Park Assist Plus (semi-autonomous parking assistance), as well as a set of airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor.
At the center of the Golf R’s dashboard is a new 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system (upgraded from 10 inches). The system includes navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to myVW connected services for emergency assistance and remote features. Volkswagen’s Plus Speech with AI voice assistant is available through subscription in the myVW mobile app. Audio comes through a nine-speaker Harman Kardon system.
