Volkswagen offers the 2024 Golf R as a single trim package powered by a 315-horsepower (280 lb.-ft. of torque) turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. A standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission controls the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, which is enhanced with torque vectoring. With the manual gearbox, the Golf R is EPA-rated to achieve 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. This changes to 22 mpg around town and 31 mpg on the open road with the automatic transmission.
The heart of the Golf R is a mechanical picture filled with upgraded components. Volkswagen gives this performance hatchback dynamic progressive power steering and a sport suspension for superior handling, while an innovative cross-differential system minimizes understeer. Meanwhile, cross-drilled front and rear brake rotors give the Golf R extra stopping power.
The car’s other key standard features include a power panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front sport seats with power adjustments, tri-zone automatic climate control, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 10.25″ configurable digital instrument display (Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro), a head-up display, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and 19-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires. It also has LED exterior lighting with automatic headlights, a front grille integrated light bar, heated power side mirrors (with position memory and passenger-side auto-tilt), heated washer nozzles, poor weather lights, side-mirror puddle lamps, rain-sensing variable intermittent windshield wipers, adjustable ambient cabin lighting, an auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, four USB ports (two per row), and wireless device charging.
Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite of the latest driver-assist technologies is installed on the 2024 Golf R. This standard package consists of forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, Emergency Assist (a semi-autonomous system that controls the vehicle if the driver fails to respond to specific alerts), front and rear parking sensors, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Travel Assist is also standard. It’s another semi-autonomous feature that helps control vehicle speed and lane centering (requires a driver’s hands on the steering wheel). The Golf R’s other safety features are multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor.
A 10-inch touchscreen is the centerpiece of the Golf R’s infotainment system. It’s reinforced with a Harmon Kardon sound system, navigation, wireless smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and access to myVW connected services (for emergency help and remote features).
