The front-wheel-drive 2024 Golf GTI sets out from the factory in three trim levels: S, SE, and Autobahn. Their powertrain pairs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (241 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque) with either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The EPA’s official fuel economy estimations show that the Golf GTI with the automatic tranny returns 24 mpg around town and 33 mpg on the highway, while the manual version achieves 23 city/34 highway.
The Golf GTI S has a sport-tuned suspension, a torque-sensing limited-slip differential, automatic LED headlights with dynamic range control, LED fog lights with low-speed cornering lights, heated washer nozzles, rain-sensing wipers, and heated power-folding side mirrors with position memory and passenger-side auto tilt-down. Its interior highlights are single-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, cloth upholstery with the classic VW plaid inserts, heated front sport seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 60/40-split rear seatback with a folding center armrest. This trim’s tech stable is abundant as well, with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, four USB-C ports (two data and two charging), wireless phone charging, ambient interior lighting, and Digital Cockpit Pro (VW’s configurable 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster).
The SE adds a panoramic sunroof and an integrated front-end light bar, while the Autobahn is furnished with an adaptive damping system, summer performance tires on 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, ventilated power-adjustable front seats, heated outboard second-row seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a head-up display. All trims are eligible for the aforementioned 380 package (manual transmission, adaptive damping system blacked-out exterior elements, available two-tone exterior with black roof, 19-inch wheels, and summer tires).
Volkswagen’s advanced IQ.Drive safety suite is standard in the ’24 Golf GTI, bolstering each trim with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection (Front Assist), front and rear parking sensors, Lane Assist (lane keeping), Travel Assist semi-automated driving and driver attention monitoring. The SE and Autobahn also get dynamic road sign display, while the Autobahn is the only trim with standard Light Assist (automatic high beams).
The infotainment system in the S trim has an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a sound system with six speakers. The SE and Autobahn move up to the Discover Pro infotainment system, adding a 10-inch touchscreen, navigation, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Harman Kardon sound system with nine speakers.
