Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy

Taos buyers can choose from the S, SE, and SEL trim levels. Across the board, there’s a turbocharged 158-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. While front-wheel drive is standard in the S and SE, all-wheel drive – which is standard in the SEL – is available. The ’23 Taos with FWD gets an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas models with AWD are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This is quite an efficient vehicle, too, achieving an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway with FWD and 25 city/32 highway with AWD. A drive selector with four modes (Snow, On-Road, Off-Road, and Off-Road Custom) is included In conjunction with AWD.

This is an upscale base trim with several top-of-the-line features, including automatic LED headlights, roof rails, a synthetic leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button ignition, an 8-inch digital gauge cluster (Digital Cockpit), and a USB-C data port. Its seats are upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather and cloth, and the second-row bench makes life easier with a 60/40-split, plus a center armrest with convenient pass-through. The S’s infotainment hub is a sleek 6.5-inch touchscreen that manages Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. For driver-assist technology, there’s forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The upgrades for those who choose the SE are remote start, proximity keyless entry, heated washer nozzles, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, full synthetic-leather seats (heated in the front row), a heated steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and wireless phone charging. This mid-grade trim also gets a USB-C charge port and these infotainment upgrades: an 8-inch touchscreen, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wireless smartphone connect. To top things off, the safety suite is enhanced with adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane keeping assist (Travel Assist), lane departure warning (Lane Assist), and driver attention monitoring (Emergency Assist).

The range-topping SEL is loaded, getting an adaptive front lighting system with dynamic cornering lights, a unique grille with an integrated light bar, and a panoramic sunroof. The cabin experience is enhanced as well with ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch configurable digital gauge cluster (Digital Cockpit Pro), real leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and an illuminated cargo area with a 12V power outlet. What’s more, the multimedia system has built-in navigation and a high-end BeatsAudio sound system, while dynamic road sign display and rear parking sensors join the driver-assist suite.
