Let’s look more in depth at what this popular four-door offers.
Trims and Powertrain
The 2021 Jetta is a front-wheel drive sedan made in five trim levels: the S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The powertrain consists of a 147 hp turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission standard on the S and R-Line and an eight-speed automatic standard on the SE, SEL, and SEL Premium (the S and R-Line can be ordered with the automatic as an option). Fuel economy is excellent, with the EPA rating it for 30 miles per gallon around town and 40 mpg on the open road.
Standard Features and Options
The base trim, the S, gets some nice features, such as 16-inch wheels and LED headlights, and is eligible for VW’s Driver Assistance Package (heated exterior mirrors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert). The SE’s standard equipment list includes the heated exterior mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, a panoramic sunroof, a steering wheel wrapped in faux leather, V-Tex (simulated leather) seats, heated front seats, and automatic climate control with two zones. Buyers can opt for the Cold Weather Package (heated steering wheel, remote start, heated windshield washer nozzles, and heated rear outboard seats).
The R-Line is the sportiest trim, getting unique badging, a trim-specific back bumper, fog lights, gloss-black exterior trim, an electronic differential lock (improves traction during acceleration), and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The available options include the Cold Weather Package and an XDS Cross Differential System, which improves cornering by putting brake pressure on the inside front wheel. The SEL gets the contents of the Cold Weather Package as standard along with wireless smartphone charging, rain-sensing wipers, ambient interior lighting, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. At the top, the SEL Premium gets driver’s seat memory, exterior mirror memory, real leather seats, and ventilated front seats with bolsters.
Safety and Technology
Those who choose the base S trim can elect to add the Driver Assistance Package to get forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The other trims get that package automatically, and the SEL and SEL Premium add adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams.
The base version of VW’s Car-Net infotainment system is standard on the three lowest trims, with a 6.5-inch touchscreen that controls its functions (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming capability, and a sound system). They also get a USB data port. The SEL moves up to an 8-inch touchscreen with voice recognition and a BeatsAudio sound system with nine speakers; the SEL Premium receives a navigation system.
